Our clients had recently purchased the property and came to us with a clear sense of style; warm, paired-back and practical for a young, busy family. The brief was straightforward: bring the bathroom in line with the rest of the home, drawing on Japandi influences without sacrificing the everyday functionality a household like theirs demands.
From the outset, the material palette drove every decision. Mosaic floor tiles in a warm sage tone establish a grounded base, while timber ceiling cladding and custom oak joinery introduce warmth and texture. A fluted glass shower screen adds quiet visual interest without competing with the surrounding finishes. Brushed platinum tapware completes the palette – refined without being precious.
Keeping the material selection intentionally restrained was key. Each finish was chosen to contribute to a cohesive whole, with nothing fighting for attention. The result is a space that feels considered and calm, where every element earns its place.
A layout change early in the design process proved to be one of the project’s most significant decisions. By removing the existing linen cupboard, we were able to open up the floorplan, introduce a larger vanity with generous storage, and significantly improve circulation through the space. It’s the kind of move that looks obvious in hindsight – but only once you’ve done the thinking.
This project also marked a first for our team: a timber-clad ceiling. It’s a finish we had long admired, and the Majura bathroom gave us the right opportunity to explore it properly. The Glosswood Blackbutt lining brings warmth to the ceiling plane in a way that paint simply can’t, and it anchors the Japandi character of the space without overpowering it.
Material and finish selection was guided by a commitment to quality and longevity. Key materials and finishes include Astra Walker Brushed Platinum tapware, Blackrock Tiles Japan Hani Sage Green mosaic floor tiles paired with Basic White Satin wall tiles, custom joinery by Made Joinery in Polytec Boston Oak, and Glosswood Blackbutt Satin ceiling cladding.
The completed Majura bathroom is a space that works hard without showing it. It supports the rhythm of a busy household while still feeling resolved, quiet and genuinely beautiful.
This Ainslie renovation demonstrates that a single room, when approached with the right intent and care, can shift the entire feel of a home.
